Oolite

Oolite

This is a retro 3D Space Simulation in the style of the classic Elite. In Oolite, players fly from planet to planet, buying and selling goods, shooting pirates or committing acts of piracy. There’s no goal other than perhaps to achieve the rank of ELITE. It’s designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon.

In the tradition of open-world games, there’s no overall story: you can be a millionaire trader, a veteran combateer, a feared pirate, a lonely miner, a notorious smuggler, or all of them, or something else entirely, based on your own actions. The aim of the game is to fly from planet to planet, buying and selling goods, shooting pirates or committing acts of piracy.

There are several missions, and the game is expandable and many expansion packs and mods are available.

Oolite is designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be modified using simple, free graphics packages and text editors.

Features include:

  • High resolution collision detection
  • Large array of equipment to add to ships
  • Well developed artificial intelligence
  • Over five hundred expansion packs released

OSSupportedNotes
The game requires only a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and an Open GL-capable graphics card for basic performance. There are some minor differences between Oolite for Linux and Oolite on Mac OS X: the Linux version does not support iTunes integration, or Growl.
